OBI SEEKS OPPOSITION ALLIANCE TO TACKLE NATION’S CHALLENGES
Former presidential candidate Peter Obi has called for stronger unity among opposition leaders, warning that Nigeria’s growing challenges require collective action beyond political rhetoric.
In a statement, Obi said the country is at a critical stage, facing worsening insecurity, economic hardship, unemployment, and declining public trust, stressing that only coordinated efforts can address these issues effectively.
His comments come amid recent political realignments, including the defection of former Kano State governor Rabiu Kwankwaso to the African Democratic Congress (ADC).
Kwankwaso was received in Kano by top opposition figures such as David Mark, Aminu Waziri Tambuwal, Rotimi Amaechi, Dino Melaye, and John Odigie-Oyegun, a move seen as part of efforts to build a stronger opposition coalition ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Obi revealed that he visited Kano at Kwankwaso’s invitation, describing the development as a significant step toward “rescuing and rebuilding” Nigeria’s democracy. He urged political actors to set aside ethnic, religious, and regional differences in the interest of national progress.
He emphasised that the focus should go beyond winning elections to rebuilding institutions, restoring confidence in governance, and securing a better future for Nigerians.
According to him, the moment demands sacrifice, disciplined leadership, and a commitment to competence and integrity, adding that unity among opposition members is crucial to tackling insecurity and other pressing national challenges.
