The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has promised to introduce a transparent fuel subsidy framework if elected president in the 2027 general elections.

Obi made the pledge on Monday in Sokoto during a town hall meeting with members and supporters of the party, where he outlined proposals covering the economy, security, agriculture, education and infrastructure.

He criticised the previous fuel subsidy regime, alleging that corruption reduced its effectiveness and prevented Nigerians from receiving the full benefits of government intervention.

Obi said his proposed administration would establish a system for monitoring crude oil production, transactions, imports, exports and government revenue from oil and gas activities.

He said transparency in the management of the sector would be central to ensuring that public resources were properly accounted for.

On the economy, Obi said an NDC government would prioritise agriculture, education, security and infrastructure to improve productivity and create economic opportunities.

He also pledged to expand rail transportation, including links connecting Sokoto, Kebbi and Zamfara with other parts of the North-West and the country.

On insecurity, he said his administration would work with state governors to tackle banditry, kidnapping and terrorism, while supporting farmers with fertiliser subsidies and other interventions.

His running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, also criticised the APC administration over security and economic challenges in the North-West.
