Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called for political campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections to focus on issues affecting Nigerians rather than personal attacks and name-calling.

Obi made the call on Friday at the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference in Enugu, where he urged the media to play a stronger role in shaping political discussions.

He said journalists and editors should question politicians about their records, qualifications, policies and campaign promises, while challenging candidates who divert discussions into personal attacks.

Obi said campaign debates should focus on issues capable of improving governance, strengthening national unity, enhancing security and promoting economic prosperity.

The former Anambra State governor also urged the media to ensure that political candidates are allowed to campaign freely across the country. He said preventing opponents from campaigning would undermine the democratic process.

Obi further argued that politicians should personally respond to allegations or questions about their records instead of relying on aides or supporters to speak for them.

His comments come as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties and candidates expected to campaign across the country.

He urged editors to hold political actors accountable and ensure that election-related discussions remain centred on policies and the concerns of Nigerians.
