OBI ASKS UNN TO OPEN HIS STUDENT RECORDS AMID CREDENTIAL DISPUTE
Former Anambra State Governor and Labour Party presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Peter Obi, has called on the University of Nigeria, Nsukka to make available his academic records as questions over his educational credentials continue to generate public debate. Obi said releasing the records would help settle the controversy surrounding his academic history and provide clarity on information already in the public domain.
The development follows a legal effort by former Labour Party spokesperson Abayomi Arabambi, who approached the Federal High Court in Abuja seeking access to Obi’s academic and service records. The suits were filed against the University of Nigeria, the West African Examinations Council and the National Youth Service Corps, with the aim of obtaining official documents relating to Obi’s educational background and NYSC records.
Obi has maintained that he has nothing to hide and that the relevant institutions should make his records available in accordance with the law. His position is that the release of official documents would allow the public to verify the information surrounding his academic qualifications rather than relying on allegations, political claims or speculation.
The controversy has also triggered reactions from political groups, with Obi’s supporters defending his educational background and describing the questions being raised as politically motivated. The dispute comes at a time when political activities ahead of the 2027 general election are intensifying, with Obi expected to remain a prominent figure in the opposition political space.
The former governor’s call for the release of his records is expected to keep the issue in the public spotlight as the court considers the cases. The eventual disclosure of the relevant documents, if ordered or otherwise lawfully released by the institutions concerned, could provide a clearer basis for resolving the competing claims over Obi’s academic credentials.
