Authorities of Obafemi Awolowo University have announced the appointment of Adejare Bello as the new Pro-Chancellor and Chairman of the institution’s Governing Council.

The announcement was made on Friday in a statement issued by the university’s Public Relations Officer, Abiodun Olarewaju.

According to the statement, Bello brings extensive legislative and diplomatic experience to the role, having previously served as Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly. He was also appointed as Nigeria’s Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary to Mexico in June 2021, with concurrent accreditation to Costa Rica, Guatemala, and Panama.

An alumnus of the university, Bello earned his degree in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University. The university noted that his academic background and strong connection to the institution position him to support its growth and strategic development.

The statement added that the Ede-born politician is widely respected for his humility, accessibility, and strong interpersonal relationships.

Bello replaces the immediate past Chairman of the Governing Council, Siyan Oyeweso, who died in December 2025 at the age of 64.

The university community congratulated Bello on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the council and work with stakeholders to advance the institution’s progress and global reputation.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
