OANDO EXPLORES POWER GENERATION FROM IDLE OIL WELLS
Energy company Oando is exploring plans to generate electricity from abandoned oil wells as part of efforts to unlock new value from dormant energy assets and support Nigeria’s power sector.
The company said the initiative is aimed at converting inactive oil wells into productive energy sources while contributing to the country’s electricity generation capacity. The move aligns with broader efforts to diversify Nigeria’s energy resources and improve access to reliable power.
Industry experts said repurposing abandoned wells could provide an opportunity to maximize existing infrastructure, reduce waste, and create additional revenue streams within the energy sector. They noted that such projects could also support Nigeria’s transition toward more efficient and sustainable energy solutions.
Oando’s proposal comes amid ongoing efforts by stakeholders to address the country’s electricity supply challenges through innovative approaches and increased private sector participation.
The company emphasized that successful implementation would require collaboration with regulators, technical partners, and other industry players to ensure the project meets safety and operational standards.
Analysts believe the initiative could mark a new approach to utilizing Nigeria’s oil assets while supporting long-term energy security and economic growth.
