NYSC RAISES CONCERN OVER GROWING REJECTION OF CORPS MEMBERS BY EMPLOYERS
The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has expressed serious concern over the increasing rate at which corps members are being rejected by their assigned employers.
Brigadier-General Olakunle Nafiu, NYSC Director-General, raised the issue during the 2025 Annual Corps Employers’ Workshop held on Wednesday in Jos, Plateau State. Speaking through Deputy Director Gbamisola Salami, he emphasized that such rejections deprive corps members of the opportunity to gain hands-on experience and practical knowledge in their fields.
“Employers offer platforms for corps members to utilize their skills and gain real-world exposure. Rejections undermine this critical objective,” he noted.
Nafiu also highlighted other challenges, including employers’ delays or failures in requesting corps members, poor welfare conditions, and inhumane treatment in some establishments. He urged organizations to provide a supportive and inclusive environment that enhances corps members’ welfare and productivity.
Jonathan Yavala, the Plateau State NYSC Coordinator, said the workshop was designed to strengthen partnerships and improve communication between the scheme and employers. “You are not just supervisors—you are mentors and collaborators in the task of nation-building,” he told the participants.
Also speaking at the event, Plateau State Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Musa Ashoms, called for the creation of an enabling environment that allows corps members to excel and make meaningful contributions to their host communities.
