NSUGBE RESIDENTS SEEK PEACE AS COMMUNITY ELECTS NEW MONARCH

Residents and leaders of Nsugbe community in Anambra East Local Government Area of Anambra State have appealed for peace following the election of a new traditional ruler.

The Chairman of the caretaker committee set up by the state government, Victor Attah, said the government suspended the Nsugbe Town Union on August 24, 2026, over alleged irregularities and appointed the committee to restore peace and conduct a fresh election.

Attah said the traditional stool had been zoned to Ivite village, prompting disagreements over the electoral process. He explained that the committee replaced the delegate system with an inclusive process allowing every eligible Ivite indigene to vote.

He urged Senator Tony Nwoye and other stakeholders to allow the community to peacefully choose its traditional ruler. He also denied allegations that the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Tobechukwu Nweke, influenced the election.

However, court documents from the Awka Judicial Division showed that Justice Jude Obiora had issued an order on August 5 restraining any election or selection of an Igwe for Nsugbe pending determination of the substantive case.

Despite the controversy, Governor Chukwuma Soludo later presented a certificate of recognition to the newly elected traditional ruler, Chief John Nweke.

The Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Vin Ezeaka, urged all parties to remain calm and avoid actions capable of disrupting peace in the community.
