The Nigeria Social Insurance Trust Fund (NSITF) has issued a lump-sum compensation cheque of ₦86,028,283.30 to Seplat Energy Producing Nigeria Unlimited (formerly Mobil Producing Nigeria Unlimited) under the Employees’ Compensation Scheme. The presentation took place at Seplat House in Lagos.

According to a statement from NSITF's Corporate Affairs Department, the compensation package also includes a monthly payment of ₦1,107,667.30 to the deceased employee’s spouse. This payment will continue until the couple’s only child turns 21, in accordance with Section 29 of the Employees’ Compensation Act.

The Managing Director of NSITF, Barr. Oluwaseun Faleye, emphasized that ongoing reforms within the Fund are reducing processing times and ensuring timely support for families of affected workers. “This payment demonstrates our commitment to delivering swift and lawful protection to Nigerian workers, particularly in high-risk sectors like oil and gas,” Faleye stated.

He also called on employers—especially those in hazardous industries—to register and stay compliant with the Employees’ Compensation Scheme (ECS), adding, “Compliance should be seen not as an expense but as an investment in employee welfare and a company’s reputation.”

Seplat Energy’s Managing Director, Oladotun Isiaka, praised NSITF’s prompt response, noting, “It is encouraging to witness a government agency effectively fulfilling its statutory obligations. Our annual contribution of about ₦1.7 billion to the Fund is made with the confidence that support will be available when needed—and today’s response proves that.”

The statement highlighted that the ₦86 million payout is notably higher than the ₦15.5 million lump sum delivered to the family of a Medplus employee on June 30, 2025, which was accompanied by a ₦1.192 million monthly survivor benefit.

NSITF further disclosed that it settled 22,350 claims across the country in 2024. The Fund’s operational improvements—aligned with the objectives of President Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda—have led to faster processing and broader engagement with compliant employers. Visits were made to various sectors this year, including manufacturing, construction, maritime, and healthcare, to reinforce the practical benefits of adhering to the ECS.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
