NSIB, NIMASA FORGE STRONGER PARTNERSHIP TO ENHANCE MARITIME SAFETY

The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) and the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) have reaffirmed their commitment to deeper collaboration aimed at strengthening maritime safety, security, and effective investigation of marine casualties across Nigerian waters.

During a courtesy visit by NSIB Director-General, Captain Alex Sabundu Badeh Jnr., to NIMASA, both agencies agreed to develop a robust framework for closer cooperation. Key areas of focus include marine casualty investigations, real-time information sharing, joint capacity building, and the implementation of safety recommendations.

NIMASA Director-General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, emphasized that stronger institutional synergy is essential to protecting lives, vessels, and the marine environment while advancing the Federal Government’s Marine and Blue Economy agenda. He described the partnership as critical for fostering a safer and more resilient maritime domain.

Captain Badeh highlighted NSIB’s mandate to conduct independent investigations and issue actionable safety recommendations across all modes of transportation. The collaboration is expected to minimize overlaps, enhance transparency, and align Nigeria’s practices with International Maritime Organisation (IMO) standards.

Stakeholders believe the partnership will significantly reduce accidents, improve emergency response, and build public confidence in the nation’s waterways. As Nigeria positions itself as a regional maritime hub, such inter-agency cooperation is seen as vital for sustainable growth in the sector.
