Flood Alert: NSCDC Urges At-Risk Abia Communities to Move to Safer Areas

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has issued a serious flood alert to residents living in flood-prone areas of Abia State, urging them to relocate immediately for their safety.

This warning came from the State Commandant, Akinsola Aderemi, in a press statement released on Friday and signed by the NSCDC Public Relations Officer, Doreen Udugwu.

According to the Commandant, forecasts from the Nigeria Hydrological Services Agency (NIHSA) and the Nigeria Meteorological Agency (NiMET) predict heavy flooding starting in August, with nine local government areas listed as high-risk zones.

The affected LGAs include:

Aba North

Isiala Ngwa North

Isuikwuato

Ukwa East

Ukwa West

Umuahia North

Umuahia South

Arochukwu

To prepare for the expected floods, the NSCDC has activated its Disaster Management Unit and instructed area commanders and divisional officers to carry out community sensitisation campaigns across all 17 LGAs in the state.

“We are committed to ensuring the safety and security of all Abia residents. Our officers are on ground to protect lives and properties, especially during this critical period,” said Commandant Aderemi.

He advised residents to listen to official information, avoid taking risks, and move to safer grounds before the situation worsens.

The warning serves as a wake-up call for residents, especially in vulnerable areas, to take action now rather than wait until it's too late.

With the rainy season intensifying, the best protection is early preparation and timely relocation.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
