The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has announced the deployment of 20,850 personnel to ensure safety and order during Saturday’s by-elections in 16 constituencies across 12 states.

In a statement on Friday, NSCDC spokesperson Babatunde Afolabi said the directive came from the Commandant-General, Ahmed Audi, who stressed the need for a smooth and secure electoral process.

According to the statement, NSCDC personnel will work closely with the Nigeria Police Force — the lead agency for election security — to protect election officials, voters, and sensitive materials.

State commandants have been instructed to act professionally, respect citizens’ rights, and ensure polling units remain peaceful throughout the voting process.

“You are hereby directed to work in synergy with relevant sister security agencies within Anambra, Edo, Jigawa, Kaduna, Ogun, Oyo, Taraba, Kogi, Kano, Niger, and all states where the by-election would be held,” the statement read in part.

The Commandant-General also encouraged eligible voters to turn out in large numbers and participate peacefully in choosing their representatives.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
