The Commandant General of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Ahmed Abubakar Audi, has raised serious concerns about the growing wave of criminal activities and destruction of national infrastructure across the country.

Speaking during his visit to the Abia State NSCDC headquarters in Umuahia on Wednesday, Audi warned that Nigeria is facing increasing threats from what he described as asymmetric warfare — a form of conflict involving sabotage, vandalism, and other non-traditional tactics.

He pointed to crimes such as illegal oil bunkering and the vandalism of critical national infrastructure as major threats to the country’s economy and national security.

“If these acts of economic sabotage are not urgently addressed, they could severely affect our nation’s Gross Domestic Product (GDP),” he said.

The NSCDC boss emphasized the Corps' key role in protecting Nigeria’s critical assets, including pipelines, power facilities, and other national infrastructure. He assured Nigerians that the agency is committed to confronting these challenges head-on.

His visit to Abia was part of a wider tour of the South-East, aimed at assessing the performance of NSCDC officers on the ground, improving operational strategies, and strengthening security in the region.

Audi also used the opportunity to commission a new office complex built by the Abia State Command, led by Commandant CC Akinsola Aderemi. He commended the Commandant for his efforts and urged him to do even more.

To boost morale, the CG promised better welfare for NSCDC officers, including timely payment of entitlements, enhanced insurance coverage, and more training opportunities to improve performance.

As part of the tour, Audi also paid a courtesy visit to Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti.

The NSCDC remains on high alert as it intensifies efforts to safeguard Nigeria’s vital infrastructure against economic saboteurs and criminal networks.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
