NSA REVIEWS NATIONAL SECURITY, TO FORMULATE NEW STRATEGY
The National Security Adviser (NSA) has begun a review of Nigeria’s national security framework as the Federal Government seeks to develop a new strategy for addressing the country’s evolving security challenges.
The review is expected to provide an opportunity to assess existing security measures, identify operational gaps and strengthen coordination among agencies responsible for protecting lives and property.
Nigeria continues to face multiple security threats, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping, communal violence, organised crime and other forms of criminal activity. These challenges have placed pressure on security institutions and increased calls for more effective intelligence gathering, improved operational capacity and stronger collaboration.
A renewed national security strategy is expected to consider the changing nature of these threats and the need for responses that go beyond conventional military operations. Intelligence-led policing, border security, technology deployment and cooperation between federal and state authorities remain important areas for consideration.
The review also highlights the importance of addressing the underlying factors that contribute to insecurity, including unemployment, poverty, weak community protection structures and limited access to essential services in vulnerable areas.
Security experts have consistently emphasised that sustainable peace requires a combination of effective law enforcement, intelligence sharing, community engagement and development initiatives.
For the Federal Government, the exercise presents an opportunity to strengthen the country's security architecture and ensure that relevant agencies operate within a coordinated framework.
The effectiveness of the proposed strategy will ultimately depend on its implementation, adequate funding, accountability and the ability of security institutions to translate policy decisions into measurable improvements in public safety.
