NORTH-EAST GOVERNORS PLAN REGIONAL AIR SHUTTLE
Governors of the six North-East states have agreed to establish a regional air shuttle aimed at reducing transportation costs and improving the movement of people and goods across the subregion.
The decision was contained in a communiqué issued after the 13th meeting of the North-East Governors’ Forum held in Maiduguri, Borno State. The forum comprises Adamawa, Bauchi, Borno, Gombe, Taraba and Yobe states.
The governors said the proposed air shuttle would make travel between and within the states faster and easier while supporting economic activities across the region.
The forum also resolved to partner with Green Ville Energy to expand Compressed Natural Gas and Liquefied Natural Gas stations in the six states. The initiative is expected to reduce transportation costs and strengthen regional logistics.
The governors welcomed Federal Government support through the North-East Development Commission for 10,000 electric tricycles, 10 electric buses and 300 electric taxis, which are expected to be launched in October.
The forum also discussed infrastructure, power, security, education and environmental challenges affecting the region.
On power, the governors noted that the Dadinkowa Hydropower Plant had begun supplying electricity to the national grid and called for greater use of solar and mini-grid solutions.
They also reaffirmed their commitment to regional cooperation and coordinated efforts to improve security, economic integration and development across the North-East.
