Former Super Eagles midfielder, Ogenyi Onazi, has cautioned the Nigerian team to maintain focus and discipline as they prepare for next month’s World Cup qualifying playoff against Gabon.

The Eagles displayed strong form in their recent qualifier against Benin Republic in Uyo, securing a dominant 4-0 victory that revived their chances of reaching the World Cup after a shaky start to the campaign.

After missing the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Nigeria appeared at risk of another setback, but two vital wins under Eric Chelle’s guidance helped them finish second in Group C with 17 points — keeping their qualification hopes alive. The team must now defeat Gabon in a decisive playoff to progress further.

Nigeria will face The Panthers in the semi-final on November 13, with the winner set to play either Cameroon or DR Congo for Africa’s spot in the intercontinental playoffs scheduled to take place in Mexico in March 2026.

Speaking ahead of the encounter, Onazi, who once played for Napoli, stressed the importance of caution and respect for their opponents, currently ranked 77th in the world.

“It won’t be an easy match because Gabon had an impressive qualification run,” Onazi said in an interview with Footy-Africa. “The team must stay composed and approach the game carefully. Football has evolved, and Gabon will be a difficult opponent. I believe Nigeria can win, but they must treat it like a World Cup or AFCON final.”

If the Super Eagles advance past the continental playoffs, they will face a team from another confederation in the intercontinental playoff for a place at the 2026 World Cup.

The 2013 Africa Cup of Nations champion also expressed optimism that the team will succeed in securing qualification.

“I’m confident they’ll qualify,” he added. “There were doubts earlier, but recent performances have restored belief. The players now understand the importance of representing Nigeria on the world stage. Their determination and commitment will drive them to success.”

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
