NO ELECTORAL ACT REVIEW BEFORE 2027 POLL – SENATE
National Assembly resolves to maintain current electoral framework, citing need for legal stability and predictability ahead of general elections
The Nigerian Senate has officially declared that there will be no further amendments or reviews of the Electoral Act ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Speaking on behalf of the upper legislative chamber, leadership sources emphasized that tinkering with the electoral laws at this critical juncture could introduce avoidable legal ambiguity and disrupt the electoral timetable.
The decision comes as the country enters the final stretch of preparations for the polls, with the independent electoral commission already finalizing guidelines based on the existing legal framework.
Lawmakers noted that maintaining legal stability ensures that political parties, candidates, and election administrators operate with absolute certainty regarding the rules of engagement.
While acknowledging various suggestions for reform from civil society organizations and political stakeholders, the Senate maintained that prioritizing consistency outweighs the introduction of new legal provisions so close to voting day.
Electoral analysts and legal experts have largely welcomed the clarification, pointing out that predictability is a cornerstone of credible and hitch-free democratic elections.
