NNPP URGES INEC TO IGNORE ALLEGED CONGRESS NOTICE

A faction of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to disregard a “purported notice” of congress.

The party’s National Secretary, Mr. Oginni Sunday, who belongs to the NNPP faction loyal to Founder and Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Dr. Boniface Aniebonam, made the call during a news conference in Abuja on Friday.

Sunday said the proposed convention letter, signed on behalf of the Rabiu Kwankwaso-led group—described as a pressure faction within the party—violated the April 3 judgment of the FCT High Court.

He noted that, based on the recent High Court ruling on suit No. FCT/HC/CV/5518/2024, the letter’s signatories, Dr. Ahmed Ajuji and Dipo Olayoku, are “meddlesome interlopers” in NNPP affairs.

“The FCT High Court judgment had already settled the matter of the proposed convention,” Sunday emphasized.

He explained that Ajuji and his faction had previously filed a suit on December 16, 2024, aiming to stop the lawful congress and convention organized by the Aniebonam-led NNPP Board of Trustees. This was followed by an earlier ruling by the Abia State High Court on November 1, 2024 (Suit No. HUZ/11/2024) halting the faction’s attempt.

“Furthermore, the FCT High Court, under Justice M.A. Hassan, dismissed the case brought by the Ajuji-led faction on April 3. As a result, the Ajuji-led group are effectively debtors to the judgment, while Chief Aniebonam’s faction remains the judgment’s creditors,” he said.

Sunday described it as shocking that Ajuji and Olayoku, without appealing the judgment, still wrote to INEC to conduct an unauthorized congress and convention. He termed the move a total defiance of the December 2024 and January 2025 congresses conducted by the Aniebonam-led executives.

He added that a letter had been submitted to INEC to formally distance the commission from the purported congress, urging swift action.

Recall that on April 3, Justice Hassan dismissed the suit filed by the Kwankwaso-aligned faction challenging the legitimacy of the party’s leadership under Aniebonam and National Chairman Dr. Agbo Major. The case, filed by Ajuji and 20 others, sought to invalidate the authority of the NNPP Board of Trustees and executive officials, including National Secretary Oginni Olaposi, Deputy National Chairman Chief Felix Chukwurah, and legal practitioner Tony Obioha.

The claimants wanted the court to prevent these officials from convening meetings, holding congresses, or presiding over the national convention, citing their expulsion from the party. Justice Hassan ruled that the court lacked jurisdiction, affirming that internal party disputes, including leadership and membership matters, fall outside judicial intervention.
