The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) has raised the pump price of petrol from ₦865 to ₦992 per litre, according to findings across several retail stations in Lagos.

The sudden price adjustment, which took effect on Monday, October 13, has left many motorists and commuters in shock, with no official statement yet issued by the NNPC to explain the hike.

Attendants at various NNPC outlets confirmed receiving directives to update their meters to the new price. At the NNPC station on Ogunusi Road, Ojodu Berger, staff told The Nation that they had been instructed to switch to ₦992 per litre.

However, visits to other NNPC stations, including those in Ibafo along the Lagos–Ibadan Expressway, revealed that while some outlets still displayed the previous rate of ₦875 per litre, they were not dispensing fuel to motorists.

Several stations across Lagos and neighbouring states were also shut down or not selling petrol as of Monday, further deepening concerns about a potential fuel crisis.

The latest development comes amid widespread reports of petrol scarcity in parts of the country, especially in Abuja, where long queues have resurfaced in recent days.

Industry sources have linked the disruption to a dispute involving Dangote Refinery and the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria (PENGASSAN), although official confirmation is still pending.

As Nigerians continue to grapple with rising transportation costs and inflationary pressures, the sudden fuel price increase has sparked renewed calls for transparency in the deregulated oil market and urgent government intervention to ease the hardship.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
