NNPC INTRODUCES APP-BASED FUELING SYSTEM FOR NIGERIAN MOTORISTS

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited has started introducing a new self-service system that allows motorists to buy and dispense petrol at selected NNPC Retail stations without relying on fuel attendants. The initiative uses a mobile application through which customers can select the quantity of fuel they need, make payment and receive a code that activates the pump.

NNPC Retail plans to expand the system by deploying between 50 and 70 smart self-service stations across the country within the next six months. The service is currently available only at selected locations, which are identified on the app with a green “Self-Serve” badge. The company said the new model is part of its broader plan to modernise filling stations and make fuel purchases more convenient for customers.

To use the service, motorists are required to download the NRL Fuel App and select the fuel purchase option. After choosing their preferred fuel type, they can search through the available stations and select one offering the self-service facility. The customer then enters the amount they wish to spend, reviews the quantity and price, and completes the payment through the wallet option on the application.

Once payment is successful, the app generates a digital receipt containing an Order ID, a Self-Service Code and a QR code. At the fuel pump, the customer enters the eight-digit self-service code on the terminal and presses the hash key. After the code is validated, the pump is activated and the motorist can pick up the nozzle and dispense the exact amount of fuel already paid for.

NNPC said the smart stations will go beyond conventional petrol sales, with plans to incorporate services such as electric vehicle charging, liquefied petroleum gas and compressed natural gas facilities. The company said the initiative is part of efforts to transform its filling stations into wider energy and mobility hubs while giving motorists more control and convenience when purchasing fuel.
