The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC Ltd) has donated 35 hybrid Compressed Natural Gas (CNG)-powered buses to the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas.

The handover ceremony took place on Monday at the NNPC Towers, where the Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC Ltd, Bashir Ojulari, reaffirmed the company’s dedication to advancing the Federal Government’s gas development goals.

Ojulari highlighted that the donation aligns with NNPC’s mission to promote CNG as a cleaner, more affordable, and sustainable energy alternative. He noted that the company has made notable progress in the areas of gas supply, infrastructure, distribution, and retail networks.

“I’m proud that NNPC Ltd is at the forefront of driving the government’s gas agenda and contributing meaningfully to the nation’s energy transition,” he said in a statement released by the company on Monday in Abuja.

Also speaking at the event, Minister of State for Petroleum Resources (Gas), Ekperikpe Ekpo, emphasized that the CNG buses are more than just vehicles—they symbolize economic empowerment, social inclusion, and environmental stewardship.

“They represent a future where everyday Nigerians can travel safely, affordably, and efficiently,” the Minister remarked.

He described the initiative as a clear demonstration of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda—a strategic move to cut transportation costs, reduce petrol dependency, and harness Nigeria’s vast natural gas reserves for public benefit.

In his remarks, Mumuni Dagazau, NNPC Ltd’s Executive Vice President for Downstream, explained that adopting CNG brings significant economic advantages by decreasing reliance on petrol (PMS) and diesel (AGO), resulting in major cost reductions and encouraging the growth of the domestic gas sector.

Emmanuella Arukwe, Managing Director of the NNPC Foundation, added that the initiative reflects NNPC’s vision for an innovative energy future that prioritizes people, communities, and the environment.

Michael Oluwagbemi, Programme Coordinator and CEO of the Presidential CNG Initiative, praised NNPC Ltd for its consistent support, describing the company as a dependable partner since the programme’s inception.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
