NNPC AIMS TO BUILD ENERGY ECOSYSTEM FOR AFRICA

The Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPC) has outlined ambitious plans to build a comprehensive energy ecosystem across Africa, positioning Nigeria as a key player in the continent’s energy security and transition.

Group Chief Executive Officer of NNPC, Mr. Mele Kolo Kyari, disclosed this on Friday during the Africa Energy Forum in Abuja. He said the company is committed to leveraging Nigeria’s vast hydrocarbon resources, growing renewable energy capacity, and technical expertise to support the development of integrated energy solutions for African nations.

“Our goal is to build an energy ecosystem that ensures reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy supply across the continent. This includes upstream activities, midstream infrastructure, downstream distribution, and renewable energy integration,” Kyari stated.

The NNPC boss highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the Ajaokuta-Kaduna-Kano natural gas pipeline, the rehabilitation of refineries, and partnerships for solar and wind projects. He also mentioned plans to expand gas-to-power initiatives and support regional energy trade through the African Continental Free Trade Area (AfCFTA).

Several African countries have expressed interest in collaborating with NNPC on various energy projects. Kyari assured that the company will prioritise technology transfer, capacity building, and local content development in all partnerships.

Energy experts have welcomed the vision, noting that a strong Nigerian-led energy ecosystem could reduce Africa’s dependence on imported fuels and accelerate the continent’s industrialisation. However, they called for transparency, environmental sustainability, and equitable benefit sharing in the implementation of the plans.

The Federal Government has expressed full support for NNPC’s continental ambitions, aligning them with Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives and the quest for regional integration.

As Africa grapples with energy poverty and the challenges of climate change, NNPC’s initiative is seen as a timely contribution towards a more self-reliant and sustainable energy future for the continent.
