The detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has petitioned the Department of State Services (DSS) over his deteriorating health condition, seeking urgent medical attention.

The request was contained in a letter dated September 23, 2025, and signed by his Special Counsel, Barr. Aloy Ejimakor. The petition, titled “Re: Request for your Urgent Approval of Hospital for the Admission of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu”, appealed to the DSS Director-General to allow his immediate transfer to Clover Hospital, Wuse Zone 2, Abuja, under the care of Dr. Michael Eze.

“With reference to the latest medical evaluation of Mazi Kanu by your team of physicians… we hereby seek your kind and urgent approval of the hospital selected for his prompt admission and further management,” the letter partly read.

Ejimakor stressed the urgency, noting that the hospital had scheduled to receive Kanu “between today and tomorrow.”

The development comes after IPOB on Tuesday raised alarm over Kanu’s worsening health, accusing the DSS of deliberately endangering his life through prolonged detention and inadequate medical care.

The group warned of “grave consequences” should Kanu’s condition deteriorate further, likening the situation to “historic global flashpoints” and even comparing it to events leading to the First World War.

IPOB further insisted that Kanu’s extraordinary rendition from Kenya in 2021 violated international law and accused the British government of complicity, citing what it called London’s “neo-colonial interests” in Nigeria.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
