The Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority has ordered filling stations across the country to check and calibrate their fuel dispensing equipment following the discovery of under-dispensing at some retail outlets.

The regulator directed operators to verify their fuel dispensers and totalisers to ensure motorists receive the quantity of petrol for which they pay.

The NMDPRA warned that filling stations found repeatedly or seriously violating the directive could face sanctions, including the revocation of their operating licences.

The authority described under-dispensing as a breach of consumer trust and said the enforcement action was aimed at ensuring accurate measurement of petroleum products sold to consumers.

The directive follows reports of under-dispensing at retail outlets across the country.

The regulator said filling station operators must ensure their equipment remains properly calibrated and complies with relevant requirements.

The crackdown is part of efforts to strengthen oversight of the downstream petroleum sector and protect consumers.

About 20 filling stations were reportedly sealed between 2025 and 2026 over allegations of under-dispensing.
