NMA URGES DOCTORS TO TAKE LEAD IN FIGHT AGAINST MEDICAL QUACKERY

The Nigerian Medical Association has called on medical doctors to take a stronger leadership role in the fight against quackery and unethical practices in the healthcare sector. The association also urged doctors to uphold professional standards and protect the integrity of the medical profession.

The call reflects growing concerns about the activities of unqualified individuals who provide medical services without the necessary training, certification or professional supervision. Such practices can expose patients to misdiagnosis, inappropriate treatment and other potentially serious health risks.

The NMA stressed that doctors have a responsibility to maintain high ethical standards in their dealings with patients and colleagues. It urged medical practitioners to remain committed to the principles of professionalism, accountability and patient safety while carrying out their duties.

The association also emphasised the importance of collaboration among healthcare professionals, regulatory bodies and government agencies in tackling quackery. Stronger monitoring and enforcement, it said, would help identify unqualified practitioners and prevent them from operating outside the limits of the law.

The warning comes as Nigeria continues to face challenges within its healthcare system, including concerns over access to qualified medical professionals and safe healthcare services. The NMA maintained that doctors must demonstrate leadership by setting the right professional example and speaking out against practices that could undermine public confidence in healthcare.

The association further urged medical practitioners to continue improving their knowledge and skills while adhering to established ethical guidelines. It said maintaining public trust would require doctors to place patients' welfare at the centre of their professional responsibilities and collectively work towards a safer and more credible healthcare system.
