NLC DEMANDS N154,000 MINIMUM WAGE AMID RISING ECONOMIC HARDSHIP

The Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) has called for a new national minimum wage of ₦154,000, citing worsening economic conditions and the declining purchasing power of Nigerian workers.

The proposal was outlined in a letter issued by the Joint National Public Service Negotiating Council (JNPSNC), a body affiliated with the NLC.

Signed by Benjamin Anthony and Olowoyo Gbenga, the letter emphasized the urgent need for a comprehensive review of salaries and allowances within the public service.

According to the council, the existing wage structure no longer aligns with current economic realities, as persistent inflation, escalating food prices, and rising transportation costs continue to erode workers’ earnings.

The council explained that the proposed ₦154,000 minimum wage is intended to help restore a reasonable standard of living for workers, while urging the Federal Government to begin negotiations without delay.

This demand comes amid increasing concerns over Nigeria’s cost-of-living crisis, with many households finding it increasingly difficult to meet basic needs.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
