NIWA TO REHABILITATE INLAND WATERWAYS INFRASTRUCTURE NATIONWIDE

The National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) has announced plans to rehabilitate critical infrastructure across Nigeria’s inland waterways network as part of efforts to boost water transportation and economic activities.

The rehabilitation project will cover dredging of major river channels, repair of jetties and terminals, and upgrading of navigation aids to improve safety and efficiency. NIWA officials stated that the initiative aims to restore the full potential of inland water transport and reduce pressure on road infrastructure.

The authority emphasised that improved waterways would facilitate the movement of goods, lower transportation costs, and support the agricultural and mining sectors. The project is expected to create jobs and stimulate economic growth in riverine communities.

Stakeholders welcomed the move, noting that a functional inland waterways system is essential for achieving the government’s transportation and economic diversification goals. They called for timely execution and adequate funding to ensure the success of the rehabilitation programme.
