NIWA PARTNERS TO CLEAN UP NIGERIA’S WATERWAYS

The National Inland Waterways Authority is partnering with relevant stakeholders to improve the cleanliness and environmental condition of Nigeria’s inland waterways.

The initiative is aimed at reducing waste and pollution in rivers, canals, jetties, and other waterways while creating safer and more sustainable environments for transportation and economic activities.

NIWA said cleaner waterways would support safer navigation and improve the overall experience for passengers, boat operators, businesses, and communities that depend on inland water transport.

Environmental stakeholders said waste disposal remains a major challenge across many waterways, with plastic, household waste, and other debris affecting water quality and navigation.

They called for stronger enforcement of waste management regulations and increased public awareness to prevent residents and businesses from dumping refuse into waterways.

NIWA said the partnership would involve coordinated clean-up activities and efforts to encourage communities to take greater responsibility for protecting waterways.

The agency also stressed the importance of collaboration with state governments, local communities, private organisations, and environmental groups to sustain the initiative.

Experts said improving Nigeria’s waterways could provide wider economic benefits by supporting inland transportation, fishing, tourism, agriculture, and other activities.

They urged stakeholders to combine clean-up efforts with better waste collection systems to prevent waterways from becoming polluted again.

The initiative comes amid broader efforts to develop Nigeria’s blue economy and increase the contribution of inland waterways to national economic development.

NIWA reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining cleaner, safer, and more navigable waterways across the country.
