NITP CALLS FOR URGENT MEASURES TO ADDRESS LEKKI-EPE FLOODING

The Nigerian Institute of Town Planners has called for urgent measures to address recurring flooding along the Lekki-Epe corridor in Lagos State.

The institute said the flooding requires coordinated action from relevant authorities to protect residents, businesses and infrastructure in the affected areas.

According to the NITP, rapid development and increasing construction along the corridor have placed additional pressure on existing drainage and water management systems.

The institute stressed the importance of proper physical planning and effective drainage infrastructure in managing flood risks as urban development continues across the area.

It also called for improved maintenance of drainage channels and the removal of obstructions that could prevent the free flow of stormwater.

The NITP noted that effective flood management should involve collaboration among government agencies, urban planners, developers and residents.

The institute urged authorities to assess existing drainage networks and identify areas where additional infrastructure or upgrades may be required.

It also emphasised the need for stricter enforcement of planning regulations to ensure that new developments do not worsen flooding or obstruct natural waterways.

The call comes amid recurring concerns over flooding in parts of Lagos during periods of heavy rainfall.

The NITP said addressing the problem requires both immediate interventions and long-term urban planning measures to improve drainage, manage development and reduce the vulnerability of communities along the Lekki-Epe corridor.
