NITDA URGES REGULATORS TO SUPPORT INNOVATION SANDBOX
NITDA Urges Regulators to Support Innovation Sandbox
The National Information Technology Development Agency (NITDA) has called on regulatory agencies to support the development and adoption of innovation sandboxes as Nigeria seeks to create a more supportive environment for emerging technologies.
NITDA said innovation sandboxes can provide startups and technology companies with controlled environments to test new products and services before they are introduced to the wider market.
The agency noted that greater regulatory flexibility could help innovators develop solutions while allowing regulators to understand new technologies and identify potential risks before granting full approval.
According to NITDA, collaboration between regulators, technology companies, startups, and other stakeholders is essential to ensuring that innovation is not slowed by outdated or unclear regulatory processes.
The agency said a well-designed sandbox framework could encourage investment, promote local innovation, and help Nigerian technology businesses compete in the global digital economy.
Technology stakeholders have increasingly called for regulatory approaches that balance consumer protection with the need to encourage experimentation and new business models.
NITDA also urged regulators to strengthen communication with innovators and provide clearer guidance on compliance requirements.
Experts said innovation sandboxes could be particularly useful in sectors such as financial technology, artificial intelligence, health technology, telecommunications, and other emerging areas where regulations often struggle to keep pace with technological developments.
The agency reaffirmed its commitment to supporting digital transformation and strengthening Nigeria’s technology ecosystem.
It urged regulators to embrace collaborative approaches that can promote responsible innovation while protecting users and maintaining industry standards.
