The National Identity Management Commission has dismissed reports circulating on social media claiming that Nigeria’s National Identification Number database had been breached.

NIMC described the claims as false and urged Nigerians to disregard a viral video making allegations about the security of NIN information.

The commission advised members of the public to obtain information about the National Identity Management System only through its official communication channels.

NIMC also highlighted its recently introduced NIN Authentication service, known as NINAuth, which provides web, application programming interface and mobile verification services.

According to the commission, the system is designed to strengthen data security, protect personal information and make identity verification easier for authorised users.

The agency’s clarification followed the circulation of claims suggesting that sensitive identification information had been compromised.

NIMC urged Nigerians not to share or rely on unverified information concerning the national identity system.

The commission has continued to emphasise the importance of secure identity management as Nigeria expands the use of digital identification for access to government and other services.

The agency maintained that the viral claims did not represent the actual status of the national identification database.
