NIMASA STRENGTHENS MARITIME SECURITY AS NIGERIA PUSHES FOR REGIONAL HUB STATUS
The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) has intensified efforts to strengthen maritime security as part of broader plans to position Nigeria as a leading maritime hub in West Africa.
The agency said the move is aimed at improving safety in Nigerian waters, boosting investor confidence, and enhancing the country’s competitiveness in regional and global shipping activities.
According to officials, recent reforms have focused on tackling piracy, illegal fishing, smuggling, and other maritime-related crimes that have previously affected trade routes and port operations.
NIMASA noted that collaboration with the Nigerian Navy and other security agencies has played a key role in reducing incidents at sea, particularly through coordinated patrols and intelligence sharing.
The agency also highlighted ongoing investments in surveillance technology and capacity building for maritime personnel as part of its long-term security strategy.
Officials explained that a secure maritime environment is critical to Nigeria’s ambition of becoming a regional shipping and logistics hub, given its strategic coastal location and expanding port infrastructure.
Stakeholders in the maritime sector have welcomed the efforts, noting that improved security will enhance cargo movement, reduce operational risks, and attract foreign investment.
NIMASA reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining reforms and deepening partnerships aimed at ensuring safe, efficient, and globally competitive maritime operations in Nigeria.
