NIGERIA’S WHEAT OUTPUT RISES TO 420,000 TONNES
Nigeria’s annual wheat production has increased to about 420,000 metric tonnes from 120,000 tonnes, according to the Federal Government.
The government attributed the growth to interventions under the National Agricultural Growth Acceleration Programme, which has supported farmers and expanded wheat cultivation in the country.
The increase is part of efforts to strengthen domestic food production and reduce Nigeria’s dependence on imported wheat.
The government has continued to promote agricultural programmes aimed at improving productivity, supporting farmers and strengthening food security.
Wheat is an important input for the food and manufacturing industries, particularly for products such as bread, flour and other processed foods.
The rise in local production is expected to contribute to efforts to improve domestic supply and reduce pressure from international wheat prices and foreign exchange costs.
