NIGERIA’S GAS PRODUCTION RISES AS DOMESTIC SALES HIT 2.18BCF/D — NUPRC

Nigeria’s gas production has recorded an uptick, with domestic sales reaching about 2.18 billion standard cubic feet per day (2.18bcf/d), according to a report by the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC).

The report indicates improved gas output and stronger domestic utilisation, reflecting ongoing efforts to deepen gas development and support the country’s energy transition agenda.

Officials said the growth in domestic gas sales is driven by increased demand from power generation companies, industrial users, and other key sectors relying on natural gas for operations.

The NUPRC noted that the development aligns with Nigeria’s push to monetise gas resources more efficiently while reducing routine flaring and boosting energy security.

Industry stakeholders say sustained growth in gas production could help stabilise electricity supply, support manufacturing activities, and reduce reliance on more expensive energy alternatives.

However, analysts caution that infrastructure gaps, pipeline vandalism, and funding constraints remain key challenges that could limit the sector’s full potential.

The report also highlights government efforts to attract investment into gas processing and transportation infrastructure as part of broader reforms in the energy sector.

Authorities reaffirmed their commitment to positioning natural gas as a major driver of Nigeria’s industrial growth and economic diversification.
