NIGERIANS VALUE FOREIGN ARTISTS MORE THAN LOCAL TALENT – ERIGGA
Nigerian rapper and singer, Erigga, has voiced his disappointment over the growing preference among Nigerians for foreign entertainers while neglecting indigenous talents.
During an interview with Yanga FM, the Warri-born artist commented on the relocation of the Headies Awards to the United States, describing it as a reflection of a broader issue—Nigerians placing greater importance on international recognition than local success.
He noted that despite the abundance of talented performers and dedicated audiences within Nigeria, many still view foreign platforms as more prestigious.
Erigga said, “Nigerians have this attitude toward our own; we don’t value what we have. The average Nigerian would rather show you 300 people dancing in London than 5,000 people attending a concert in Nigeria.
“I believe music should be for everyone. Wherever you are, you should appreciate your own because they (in London) appreciate theirs. We have this disconnect—we prefer what comes from outside.
“Sometimes people say, ‘Erigga, do one English rap for me,’ and I ask them, am I an English professor? I’m here to educate the people I meet on the streets,” he added.
