NIGERIANS TO SEE BETTER ELECTRICITY SUPPLY WITHIN TWO WEEKS – ADELABU’S AIDE

The Chief Technical Adviser to the Minister of Power, Adebayo Olowoniyi, has assured Nigerians that electricity supply will begin to improve within two weeks as maintenance work on a major gas pipeline nears completion.

Speaking on Arise TV, Olowoniyi said the situation is already improving gradually, following disruptions that significantly reduced power generation across the country. He noted that the issue stemmed largely from maintenance on a key gas pipeline supplying fuel to power plants.

He explained that about 75 per cent of Nigeria’s electricity generation depends on gas, meaning any disruption to supply directly affects output nationwide. With repairs almost completed, he said full gas pressure would soon be restored, enabling power plants to return to previous generation levels.

Olowoniyi also defended the recent apology issued by the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, describing it as a demonstration of leadership rather than an admission of fault. He said the minister took responsibility and committed to resolving the issue as quickly as possible.

“I would already say that from yesterday, we would have gradually started to see some improvement… and we will see continuous improvement over the next couple of weeks,” he stated.

The development follows Adelabu’s earlier assurance that electricity supply would stabilise within two weeks, describing the outages as a temporary setback caused by factors beyond immediate government control.

The Federal Government is also targeting an increase in electricity generation to 6,000 megawatts before the end of 2026, as efforts continue to address longstanding challenges in the power sector, including gas supply constraints, ageing infrastructure, and transmission limitations.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
