The death of Nigeria’s immediate past president, Muhammadu Buhari, has sparked a wave of reactions from celebrities across the country—ranging from sober tributes to blunt criticisms.

Buhari passed away on Sunday, July 13, 2025, in a London hospital after a long illness. In response, the Nigerian government declared seven days of mourning to honour his legacy. However, the announcement triggered mixed feelings among Nigerians, including many prominent entertainers and public figures.

Singer Eedris Abdulkareem didn’t mince words, pointing out that how a person is remembered often mirrors their deeds in life. “Your legacies after life are consequences of your deeds. Innalilahi wa innalilahi rajuhun,” he wrote on social media.

Yoruba nation agitator Sunday Igboho also shared a personal take, recalling how the Buhari administration allegedly tried to harm him. “The man that sent DSS to come and kill me in the middle of the night on July 4th, 2021, has died today,” he said in a Facebook video.

Meanwhile, reality TV star Tacha urged Nigerians to acknowledge Buhari’s undeniable place in the country’s history, regardless of differing opinions. “No matter your views, Muhammadu Buhari was a major part of Nigeria’s story. RIP,” she posted on X.

Veteran actress Kate Henshaw offered a more philosophical reaction, simply writing, “Nothing dey this life,” to highlight the fleeting nature of life.

Actor and ex-BBNaija housemate Pere Egbi spoke on the deep wounds Buhari’s leadership left behind. “May his soul rest in peace until resurrection morning. President Tinubu, as you reflect on your predecessor’s legacy, I appeal to your conscience: Nigeria is hurting. Millions are broken. Many have lost faith in political leaders because the pain left behind has fermented into bitterness and hate,” he wrote.

Controversial singer Portable shared a short clip on Instagram, urging people to live rightly. “Make sure you do good. It’s Buhari that offends us, not Tinubu. Buhari died in London. May God rest his soul,” he said.

On the flip side, legendary fuji musician KWAM 1 offered a soft farewell, singing praises of Buhari in a video and wishing him eternal rest with the words, “sleep well.”

As the nation continues its official mourning, these heartfelt, blunt, and sometimes conflicting reactions from Nigerian celebrities capture the complex emotions many citizens feel about Buhari’s tenure and its impact on the country.
