Nigerian basketball star Josh Okogie is looking forward to reuniting with two-time NBA champion Kevin Durant following his move to the Houston Rockets.

The 26-year-old shooting guard, previously a free agent, has signed a one-year deal worth $3.1 million with the Rockets. The move sets the stage for a reunion with Durant, his former teammate during their time with the Phoenix Suns.

Okogie, the 20th overall pick in the 2018 NBA Draft by the Minnesota Timberwolves after his sophomore year at Georgia Tech, expressed his excitement on social media platform X, teasing Rockets fans with the message: “Houston, we have a problem.”

After spending four seasons with the Timberwolves, Okogie joined the Suns in 2022. Earlier this year, he was part of a trade deal to the Charlotte Hornets alongside three future second-round picks. However, the Hornets waived him on July 15.

Over the course of seven NBA seasons, Okogie has played in 416 games, starting 167 of them. He has averaged 6.3 points, 3.0 rebounds, 1.2 assists, and 0.93 steals in 19.1 minutes per game. In the 2024/25 season, among players who appeared in at least 40 games, he ranked fourth in steals per 36 minutes (2.8).

He played a combined 40 games during the season for both the Suns and the Hornets, recording an average of 1.20 steals in 15.6 minutes per game.

Internationally, Okogie has represented Nigeria at the 2020 Summer Olympics in Tokyo and the 2019 FIBA Basketball World Cup in China. He will now play under Nigerian head coach Ime Udoka at the Rockets.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
