A Nigerian postgraduate student residing in the United Kingdom, Chiemka Okoronta, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for raping a teenage girl in West Yorkshire and is expected to be deported after serving his sentence.

According to court reports, the 29-year-old committed the crime after the teenager became stranded on a night bus in Morley, Leeds, while both were traveling home to Bradford on March 25.

Court documents revealed that Okoronta deceived the victim into sharing a taxi with him before leading her to his accommodation and assaulting her in a locked toilet.

The prosecution informed Bradford Crown Court that the teenager’s phone battery had died after she left the bus, prompting Okoronta to offer her a ride.

Instead of taking her to Bradford Interchange as promised, the taxi diverted to his flat, where he convinced her to enter before locking her inside and attacking her.

Following the assault, the victim escaped, stopped a passerby, and used their phone to contact the police.

Judge Sophie McKone described Okoronta as a “dangerous sexual predator” during sentencing, emphasizing that the attack was premeditated.

“I am convinced that when you asked if she wanted to share your taxi to Bradford, you had already planned to bring her back to your flat to rape her,” the judge stated.

“You fabricated a reason for her to enter your flat. It is clear to me that you are a dangerous sexual predator,” McKone added.

The court ordered that Okoronta, originally from Nigeria, serve an additional three years on an extended licence following his prison term.

He will also be registered on the sex offenders list for life and deported once his sentence is complete.

In a victim impact statement read in court, the teenager said: “This incident has turned my life upside down. I have flashbacks of what happened to me. I have nightmares; one moment I feel fine, and the next, it all comes back.”

Detective Constable Sue Sutcliffe of West Yorkshire Police commended the survivor for her bravery in reporting the crime immediately.

“I want to praise the victim for her incredible courage in coming forward to report this horrific crime without delay. I encourage anyone who has experienced sexual abuse to report it so we can take appropriate action,” Sutcliffe said.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
