NIGERIAN MISSION ISSUES URGENT SAFETY ALERT AFTER EIGHT WOMEN DIE IN EKURHULENI
The Consulate-General of Nigeria in Johannesburg has issued a safety advisory to Nigerians living in and around Kempton Park, Rhodesfield and other parts of Ekurhuleni following the deaths of eight women. The consulate said the circumstances surrounding the deaths are being investigated by the South African Police Service.
The mission described the situation as a serious and developing safety concern and urged members of the Nigerian community in the affected areas to exercise caution. Nigerians were advised to remain vigilant, avoid isolated locations and promptly report suspicious activities or threats to the relevant authorities.
The consulate also encouraged community members to maintain communication with family, friends and other trusted contacts, particularly when travelling or moving around areas where they may feel unsafe. It said Nigerians should cooperate with law enforcement officials as investigations into the deaths continue.
The South African Police Service has commenced investigations into the cases, with authorities working to establish the circumstances surrounding the deaths. Police have also issued separate warnings concerning the safety of women in parts of the country as investigations and efforts to prevent further incidents continue.
The Nigerian diplomatic mission said it would continue to monitor developments and engage with the South African authorities as more information becomes available. It urged Nigerians in the affected communities to take the advisory seriously and contact the consulate if they require assistance or have information relevant to the ongoing investigations.
