THE BIGSTORY
NIGERIAN MAN SHARES HOW A BROKEN TV STRENGTHENED HIS FAMILY BOND
A Nigerian man, Chibuzor Onwurah, has shared how a simple household setback — a broken television — transformed his family life for the better.
Taking to social media on Monday, October 6, Onwurah revealed that when their TV broke down in December last year, he and his wife decided not to replace it for six months. What began as an experiment quickly became, in his words, “the best decision ever.”
According to him, the absence of a television helped his family rediscover genuine connection and togetherness.
“Without a TV, the kids read more, play together, and spend evenings outside with friends,” he wrote. “As a family, we talk more, laugh more, cook together, play games, and actually hang out.”
The father of two also shared how they started new bonding traditions, such as hosting their own family sip & paint sessions with homemade snacks like meat pies, chicken wings, and puff puff.
“The whole day turned into laughter and connection instead of everyone behind screens,” he added. “It’s now 10 months, and we’ll likely end the year without a TV. Screen time is way down, family time is way up. Best family experiment of all time.”
Onwurah’s story has since inspired many online, with parents praising his decision as a reminder of the value of unplugging from screens and reconnecting with loved ones in today’s fast-paced, digital world.
