NIGERIAN MAN SENTENCED TO 5 YEARS IN SCOTLAND FOR RAPING WOMAN IN HER HOME

A 37-year-old Nigerian man, Innocent Megbolu, has been sentenced to five years in prison by the High Court in Edinburgh after being found guilty of raping a woman in her home in Scotland.

The incident took place on August 21, 2023, in the Leith area of Edinburgh, when Megbolu attacked the victim after she had earlier asked him to leave her flat.

During sentencing on October 6, 2025, Judge Alistair Watson described the offence as “particularly harmful,” emphasizing that the assault happened in the victim’s home — a place where she should have felt safe.

“Her evidence was that she was crying and shouting, and yet you continued with your conduct,” the judge said, condemning the violent nature of the attack.

According to reports presented in court, the woman was left in shock after the assault. Witnesses told the court she had called for help shortly after, describing how Megbolu “flipped her over like a wrestling move.”

Megbolu, who had denied the charges during trial, was convicted by a jury.

His defence lawyer, Jonathan Campbell, told the court that Megbolu — a married father of two who worked in the care sector — was a first-time offender and understood that a prison sentence was “inevitable.”

Campbell added that the convict’s main concern was the impact of the conviction on his family.

Following his conviction, the court imposed a non-harassment order, preventing Megbolu from contacting or approaching the victim indefinitely. He was also placed on the sex offenders’ register for life and is expected to be deported after serving his prison term.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
