The Federal Government has reaffirmed its commitment to sustaining crude oil production levels above the quota set by the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC).

According to Gbenga Komolafe, Chief Executive of the Nigerian Upstream Petroleum Regulatory Commission (NUPRC), Nigeria’s oil production averaged 1.507 million barrels per day (bpd) in July 2025—slightly above OPEC’s assigned quota of 1.5 million bpd.

Speaking at the Project One Million Barrels Initiative, Komolafe explained that the government is working aggressively to boost oil output by reactivating dormant fields, fast-tracking regulatory approvals, and improving operational efficiency across the sector.

He noted that crude and condensate production has already risen from 1.4 million bpd to about 1.7 million bpd, with daily figures now fluctuating between 1.7 and 1.83 million bpd.

“The government has a clear target of raising production to 2.5 million bpd by 2026,” Komolafe said, adding that recent gains of nearly 300,000 barrels per day prove the strategy is working.

The increase in production is seen as crucial for Nigeria’s economy, given its heavy reliance on oil revenues. By maintaining output above OPEC’s quota, Nigeria hopes to not only boost foreign exchange earnings but also attract more investment into the energy sector.

With this momentum, the government is confident that the country is on track to achieve its long-term production goals.

"This represents a significant development in our ongoing coverage of current events."
