A Nigerian filmmaker has created a new movie using artificial intelligence, marking another milestone in the growing use of AI in African storytelling. The film, titled Ajaka Lori Okun, tells the story of Àjákà, a brave Yoruba prince who journeys to the edge of the sea to fetch sacred water that can save his dying father.

The director, whose work blends traditional Yoruba culture with modern technology, used AI tools to generate visuals, scenes, voices, and even parts of the animation.  

According to the director, the entire production process took far less time and money than a traditional film shoot. He wrote the script, fed detailed prompts into AI software, and carefully guided the tools to create the visuals and audio. He edited and refined the output to maintain cultural accuracy and emotional depth.

Ajaka Lori Okun draws from Yoruba mythology and values such as bravery, family loyalty, and respect for tradition. The story follows Prince Àjákà as he faces dangerous waters, spiritual forces, and personal trials on his quest to save his father, the king.

 The film mixes beautiful seascapes, traditional costumes, and powerful dialogue delivered in Yoruba with English subtitles.

Many in the Nigerian creative industry have reacted with a mix of excitement and curiosity. Supporters say AI can help young filmmakers tell authentic African stories without huge budgets or expensive equipment. Critics, however, worry about job losses for actors, crew members, and technicians.

The director explained that he still worked with human writers, voice artists, and cultural consultants to ensure the film felt genuinely Nigerian. “AI is a tool,” he said. “The soul of the story still comes from us.”

The film is already generating interest online, especially among young people who love Yoruba stories. It is expected to be released on streaming platforms soon.
