The music world is in shock following the tragic death of Talay Riley, a talented Nigerian-British singer and songwriter who was fatally stabbed in East London. The 35-year-old, whose real name was Mark Yinka Orabiyi, was found with stab wounds at a residence in Silvertown on June 5, 2026, and was pronounced dead despite efforts by emergency services. Police have launched a murder investigation, with several suspects already arrested.

Born and raised in East London to Nigerian parents, Talay Riley rose from a promising young talent to a Grammy-winning songwriter. He penned hits for global stars like Dua Lipa and Britney Spears, collaborated with Craig David on the 2018 album The Time Is Now, and toured with major artists. His smooth voice and songwriting gift bridged UK R&B with his Nigerian heritage, earning him respect across the industry.

Tributes have poured in from fellow musicians. Stormzy, Craig David, and others shared heartfelt messages celebrating his kindness, creativity, and impact. His family described him as more than a singer  a loving and generous soul whose light touched many lives. “With heavy hearts, we confirm that Mark ‘Yinka’ Orabiyi, known as Talay Riley, has passed away,” the family stated, thanking supporters for their love.

This senseless killing has reignited conversations about knife crime in London, especially in communities with strong African ties. For many Nigerians in the diaspora and at home, Talay’s story hits close  a young man with roots in Nigeria making waves internationally, only to be cut down too soon.

His death is a painful reminder of the fragility of life and the need for stronger action against violent crime. As fans stream his music and remember his contributions, the industry mourns not just a talented artist, but a bright light from the Nigerian-British community.

May his soul rest in peace. Talay Riley’s legacy in music will continue to inspire upcoming generations of young talents chasing their dreams.
