NIGERIAN-BRITISH BUSINESSMAN DIES AFTER COSMETIC PROCEDURE IN THAILAND

A 43-year-old Nigerian-British businessman and social media influencer, Igho Ubiribo, has died following complications from a cosmetic penis enlargement procedure he underwent while on holiday in Thailand. A UK coroner later concluded that the procedure caused a fatal pulmonary embolism, linking the businessman’s death to the cosmetic treatment.

Ubiribo, who was also known by the names “Tiny,” “Denisi” and “Ego,” reportedly travelled to Bangkok with his wife when he underwent the procedure at an unnamed clinic in March. About 40 millilitres of hyaluronic acid and lidocaine were reportedly injected during the treatment. After returning to their hotel, he complained of chest pain while receiving a massage and subsequently lost consciousness.

He was rushed to Sukhumvit Hospital, where doctors became concerned that he had suffered a pulmonary embolism. A CT scan was recommended to determine the cause of his condition, but Ubiribo reportedly lost consciousness before the examination could be completed. He was later transferred to intensive care, where medical personnel performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation for more than 100 minutes, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. He died in the early hours of March 6.

A postmortem examination carried out in the United Kingdom subsequently found cellular material in his lungs that was consistent with the hyaluronic acid used during the procedure. Pathologist John du Parcq told the inquest that the material matched the substance injected into Ubiribo and was consistent with a pulmonary embolism. Coroner Jean Harkin ultimately ruled that the cosmetic procedure caused the fatal condition.

The case has drawn renewed attention to the potential dangers associated with injectable cosmetic procedures. Ubiribo was known for documenting his affluent lifestyle on social media and had built a significant following online. His death has also highlighted concerns surrounding the risks of cosmetic treatments involving injectable fillers, particularly when serious complications arise following such procedures.
