NIGERIAN BAR ASSOCIATION OPENS FORMAL INQUIRY INTO ALLEGED MISMANAGEMENT OF ₦100 MILLION IMO STATE GOVERNMENT GRANT BY OWERRI BRANCH
National leadership institutes high-level investigative panel with an October 30 deadline to examine disbursement records, financial transparency, and project allocations following internal petitions
The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has initiated a formal investigation into allegations of financial impropriety surrounding the receipt and disbursement of a ₦100 million monetary gift extended by the Imo State Government to its Owerri branch.
The national body's intervention comes in the wake of sharp internal divisions and petitions filed by members questioning the transparency of the branch leadership regarding how the funds were managed and applied toward conference delegates and branch infrastructure.
According to administrative directives released by the association, the newly established probe committee has been mandated to examine all financial records, bank statements, and executive resolutions concerning the funds, with a strict deadline of October 30 to submit its comprehensive findings.
The investigation places the financial stewardship of the Owerri branch leadership under formal scrutiny, though national executives emphasized that no definitive findings or conclusions of wrongdoing have yet been established against any individual.
The controversy initially flared up following divergent interpretations of whether the multi-million Naira donation from the state administration was intended exclusively for subsidizing members' attendance at the annual general conference or permitted for broader infrastructural projects within the chapter.
Legal stakeholders and senior members of the association have urged calm across the Imo State chapters, maintaining that the independent audit will reinforce institutional integrity, accountability, and professional standards within the legal community.
