NIGERIA TOPS AFRICA AGAIN WITH 89 EU ERASMUS SCHOLARSHIPS

Nigeria has once again emerged as the African country with the highest number of beneficiaries in the European Union’s Erasmus+ scholarship programme, securing 89 slots for the 2026 academic session.

The European Union Delegation to Nigeria announced the results on Friday, highlighting the country’s continued dominance in the prestigious programme that facilitates student and staff mobility across European higher education institutions.

The 89 Nigerian scholars will pursue various postgraduate programmes in fields ranging from engineering, environmental science, public health, to data analytics and renewable energy in top universities across Europe.

The EU Ambassador to Nigeria, Ms. Samuela Isopi, commended Nigeria’s consistent performance. “Nigeria’s impressive number of Erasmus+ scholars reflects the quality of its students and the strong partnership between the EU and Nigerian higher education institutions. We are proud to support the academic dreams of these bright minds,” Isopi stated.

The Nigerian government, through the Ministry of Education, expressed delight at the achievement. The Minister, Prof. Tunji Alausa, said the scholarships align with Nigeria’s human capital development goals. “This is another proud moment for Nigeria. Our students continue to compete favourably on the global stage. We will continue to strengthen our education system to produce more world-class graduates,” Alausa said.

Education stakeholders have attributed the success to improved internationalisation efforts by Nigerian universities and increased awareness of the Erasmus+ programme. Several Nigerian institutions have active memoranda of understanding with European universities, facilitating smoother application processes for students.

The beneficiaries will depart for Europe in the coming months to begin their studies. Many of the scholars have expressed gratitude for the opportunity and pledged to return home after their programmes to contribute to national development.

Nigeria’s consistent top position in Africa for Erasmus+ scholarships has further enhanced the country’s reputation as a hub for academic excellence on the continent.
