NIGERIA, NIGER CUSTOMS SEEK MORE TRADE THROUGH KAMBA

The Nigeria Customs Service and its Nigerien counterpart have agreed to strengthen cooperation to improve legitimate trade along the Kamba–Tungan Gyado border corridor.

The discussions took place during a visit by a delegation from the Nigerien Customs to the Kebbi Area Command of the Nigeria Customs Service. The meeting focused on removing challenges affecting cross-border trade, increasing revenue and easing economic pressure on communities around the border.

The Comptroller of Douanes du Dosso in Niger Republic, Abdoulaye Vincent, called for stronger collaboration between the two customs administrations, particularly to facilitate increased trade through the Kamba corridor.

He said insecurity along routes through Burkina Faso and Togo, as well as the current diplomatic situation involving Benin Republic, had disrupted some existing trade routes.

The Nigerien delegation therefore encouraged traders to make greater use of the Kamba corridor for legitimate exports.

Responding, the Customs Area Controller of the Kebbi Command, Mahmoud Ibrahim, welcomed the initiative and pledged to strengthen cooperation with Nigerien Customs.

He also said the command would sensitise traders and other stakeholders on customs procedures and encourage more businesses to use the corridor.

Ibrahim said increased legitimate trade through Kamba would boost government revenue, create jobs and improve the livelihoods of communities on both sides of the border.
