The Nigerian Air Force has advanced its plan to acquire 12 AH-1Z Viper attack helicopters from the United States following a beam-signing ceremony held at the Bell Textron facility in Amarillo, Texas. Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Sunday Aneke, led a Nigerian delegation to the ceremony, which marked a major stage in the implementation of the Nigeria-United States defence cooperation programme and the Federal Government’s effort to strengthen the country’s military capabilities.

The acquisition is part of the government’s broader plan to modernise the Armed Forces and improve Nigeria’s airpower capacity for security operations. Speaking during the ceremony, Aneke said the AH-1Z Viper programme represented an important step towards building a more capable and mission-ready Nigerian Air Force. He said the helicopters were expected to improve the service’s ability to deliver airpower in coordination with ground forces in support of national security objectives.

Aneke also stressed the importance of ensuring that the equipment being acquired translates into stronger operational effectiveness rather than simply expanding the military’s inventory. He commended President Bola Tinubu for what he described as strategic leadership and support for strengthening Nigeria’s defence and security architecture. The Chief of the Air Staff also acknowledged the cooperation of the United States Government, Bell Textron, Programme Management Air 276 and other stakeholders involved in the helicopter programme.

During the visit to the United States, the Nigerian delegation inspected Bell Textron’s AH-1Z Viper production line, where the aircraft being produced for Nigeria are part of the Foreign Military Sales programme. The United States had earlier approved a possible sale involving 12 AH-1Z helicopters and associated equipment, including engines, weapons systems, training, spare parts and support. Bell has said production of the first Nigerian aircraft has begun, with completion of the aircraft planned for early 2029.

The latest development comes as the Nigerian Air Force continues to expand and modernise its helicopter fleet. Six days before the latest ceremony, the service took delivery of five additional helicopters, comprising three AW-109 Trekker B aircraft manufactured by Leonardo Helicopters of Italy and two H-125 helicopters produced by Airbus Helicopters. The government says the ongoing acquisitions are intended to strengthen the Armed Forces’ ability to respond to security threats and improve the Nigerian Air Force’s overall operational capacity.
